Recently, Glenwood Springs, Colorado, was named one of the most fun small towns in the USA to visit in the Summer. Now, our town has just been named one of the top ski towns in America as well! We think we know why you won't find a better place to get away to: location, location, location! No matter, what time of year you come to enjoy a Colorado vacation, Glenwood Springs makes the perfect Western Slope hub. In the Winter, this means you don't have to go far to find some of the best skiing in Colorado.

As we have opined in a recent blog post, you can ski top destinations like Vail, Beaver Creek, Aspen and Snowmass while saving money on your accommodations by staying at Glenwood Springs. Our local ski area, Sunlight Mountain, is not to be missed when coming for a Winter visit. It harkens back to the "good old days" of family fun that you just have to ski to believe!

People might argue that a true "ski town" should only be one found at the base of the slopes. For some that might be true. But apparently, ...

For decades, frugal skiers looking to save money have staked out Glenwood Springs as their hub to ski some of the best resorts Colorado has to offer. It was a little known secret held mostly by Front Range aficionados. Someone got the bright idea to shout out about this value packed idea and it has now taken hold as a local community promotion we are all calling "Ski 7."

The idea is simple; besides our own Sunlight Mountain, just a few miles from town, there are 7 ski areas within a short drive. The four mountains of Aspen-Snowmass are less than an hour away as well as the Vail-Beaver Creek complex a little further. Many people dream of slopeside lodging at these famous resorts. Still others, rationally understand that saving hundreds of dollars on lodging can make this getaway highly affordable! Skiers we have talked to, tell us that using this method allows them to come up to the mountains a couple times more a year! That is Big Fun!

Next door to our hotel is the Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park. But before the Adventure Park was here, it was a place known as the Fairy Caves or Glenwood Caverns. While we don't know for sure who discovered the caves, tours began in the Summer of 1895. Just a few years earlier, the railroads had arrived, so the caves were added to a roster of attractions that included the Hot Springs Pool and the Vapor Caves. By 1897, electrical wires had been strung to light the caves for tours! Written history of the caves then falls off drastically and it appears the caves closed around 1917 and did not reopen publicly until the Caverns Adventure Park got its' start in 1999.

Back at the turn of the century, just getting to the caves was an adventure. The crude trail could be hiked or a burro could transport you. If you were well heeled, you could hire a horse-drawn carriage which must have been quite a thrill ride in itself. Today, your cave adventure begins with a scenic tram ride up the side of Iron Mountain.

For many people, what makes a "family hotel" the right choice, are the size of the guest rooms. Sure, we have hotel rooms. But, have you seen our suites? The difference between our suites and our rooms is simple. The suites are two-room affairs that provide twice the space of an ordinary hotel room. In one room you will find a living area with a couch that turns into a queen-sized sleeper sofa at night. The other room features a king-sized bed in all of our suites. For your comfort and health, all of our suites are non-smoking too. Now, you can choose from three different types of suites at Hotel Glenwood Springs:

King Suite: Our basic suite features a king bed in the sleeping room and a sleeper sofa in the living room. There is room for a rollaway if needed for a maximum occupancy of five people.

King Master Suite: Take our basic King Suite above and "luxe it up" with a fireplace in the living room and whirlpool bathtub in the bathroom. It too, can accommodate a rollaway bed if need be.

While the Ute Indians knew a good thing when they saw it, the Glenwood Hot Springs Pool did not publicly debut as a "facility" in Colorado until 1888. But ever since then, it has been drawing visitors from all around the world. For good reason; Colorado's Glenwood Hot Springs Pool is the largest of it's kind in the entire world! Soon after, in 1890, the first structures designed to accommodate visitors were constructed and the steady stream of people looking for health and relaxation came to enjoy what was known back then as "The Spa of the Rockies."

During World War II, the property was taken over by the Navy and closed to the public from 1943-1946, so it could be used as a convalescent hospital. Since then, though, it's been open and a favorite tourist destination for travelers coming from near and far. The main pool is 405 feet long and 100 feet wide and is kept at about 90f. A second "therapy" pool is 100 feet long and kept at about 104f. Except for a couple of "off season" days in the year when mainte ...

In Glenwood Springs there is an equal number of natural attractions as well as man made. Here, as well, the man made attractions enhance what's naturally found! The leading attraction in Glenwood Springs combines natural hot springs with a huge man made pool. But our attractions dont stop there! Here is a list of other "must see" attractions when you visit:

Few small towns can lay claim to the myriad of activities available for all ages, like Glenwood Springs can! Each season of the year has it's own special menu of activities awaiting your discovery! Here is a list of some of our favorite seasonal pastimes around here:

Spring is a transitional month in the mountains. One day it can be wintry and then next can feel like Summer is coming on. When it comes down to it though, it's the people between the walls that make all the difference. It is very heartening when we see good reviews about our staff from travelers. We really do love operating our hotel. After all, you all arrive, in most instances, on vacation! You are relaxed and looking to have fun. Our job is to hire staff who will put on a cheery face and be willing to be helpful no matter what the circumstances. When you and they interact it is nothing short of "the spice of life!"

The simple fact remains though, you can't make a staff person be a great hospitality person. For the most part, these special people are born, not made. Our responsibility is to sift through the dozens of applicants each year and find those hidden gems; people who are self motivated, happy and willing to help out day in and day out, no matter what.
